Exploring Slapstick Comedy

After exploring R.A.D.S, we then moved onto exploring slapstick comedy in movement. Slapstick is a stylistic type of movement that focuses on the exaggeration of actions, they become more lively and are also used to create humour.

This lesson we focused on taking inspiration from the 1952 film 'Singin' in the Rain', targeting the number "Make em laugh" performed by Cosmo aka Donald O'Connor. After watching the video it was clear that most of his movements were very clumsy and silly however that was the sole purpose of them-to make the audience laugh, Though whilst he's movement was humorous Donald's expressions, posture and the way he carried his body had 100% dedication, his number was also full of  energy which kept the humour in place.

After the video we was assigned into trios and 4's to come up with a short and set he task of creating our own version of a slapstick comedy, we thought it would be comical if we went with a love triangle idea. For example, I liked Cameron, Cameron liked Taylor and Taylor liked me. The humour being that Taylor is falling for a gay man, I'm after a straight man, and Cameron is after a girl who admires this gay guy. We also played upon the idea that we each despise the one we do not admire e.g I despise Taylor.

Here is our slapstick comedy:

Creating a mirror

This lesson we decided to focus on my part of our piece. As a group we had decided that we wanted to each represent a some sort of character that as a type of body dysmorphia, I wanted to focus on the issues that surround transgender people, focusing on the the way they feel- they're born in the wrong body. Alice was going to take part in my piece so we was given ownership over this part of our masterpiece. Alice suggested that we use a number from the hit musical 'Kinky Boots', called 'I'm Not My Father's Son'. Although this song is about being a drag queen, we believed that the lyrics still transmit the same notion as it would to a transgender person in some way. We did try and devise some movement to the original soundtrack however we soon discovered that it was too fast for us so we considered looking for another version, luckily we came across an acoustic version which we decided to go with- the acoustic version also gave us the right tempo for our move...

Completing our Torchography

This lesson we wanted bock the torch-ography, we have spent a lot of time on this part of our masterpiece. So much so that other parts of our masterpiece are incomplete which is why we desired to complete it this lesson, this will give us time to go over everything in a running order and polish other parts for our final performance. Before this lesson began our producer noted that this piece is very physical theatre-ish and suggested that we include more contemporary/lyrical dance in it. Lyrical dance is when a movement as a meaning to it and it is impactful for the audience, much more 'dramatic' in some sense where as movement in Physical theatre is usually used to portray something rather than carrying a message behind it.  We also had to take into account that we needed to incorporate more R.A.D.S into our pieces, so we decided to add some more Dynamic movements. At 0.52 you can see our inclusion of light weighted  movements, flicking and sustained movements also. All o...

R.A.D.S- Space

This lesson was focused on space, however I was not present in one lesson. So I am going to analyse movement pieces I have found online and analyse them. There are many key components that make up the word space, they are the following: Spatial Awareness. Levels (Low,Medium and High). Pathways- On the floor and in the air. Peripheral Vision . Direction- this can also include stage directions as well. Dimension E.g Height,Depth and Width. Lines in space (Curved, Straight or free form). Personal and General space (Body Shape and Group shape). Planes (Vertical,Horizontal and Sagittal). This video above explores Air and Floor pathways. After watching the video I soon discovered that you do not necessarily have to be lying on the floor or jumping in the air in order for a move to be considered pathways. In my opinion, Pathways just seems to be the way you move your body along floor (or air) whether that be like the marching/walking (0.07-0.0.14) or even to the...
