R.A.D.S- Dynamics

This lesson involved us composing the final product of our movement piece- putting together every pairs' own movement and incorporating them into our main task. As we are focusing on Dynamics in this lesson it is essential that we have a full understanding of what we are actually creating. To make it easier for us to understand our director developed a sheet with key terms that branched off with other key terms- in pairs we had to come up with what movement suited what key term. We collected our ideas in and this is the result.

Flow:

Free

It was decided that the move where we swing our arms is an example of a free movement in dynamics- I have to agree with this as your arms move based solely on the direction your body is moving, therefore your arms loose and free to move in the motion your body is moving

Bound

The movement we picked for bound was the matrix, mine and Alice's action. The move is continuous and sustained as we all move as one.

Weight:

Firm

Me and Alice were given the key word of weight. We decided that a firm movement was the hacker action. This type of movement in my opinion is a percussive movement- it is very quick and sudden making it impactful.

Light

An example of a light movement in our piece is the matrix. The movement is an example of a sustained action, it is continuous and ongoing.

Space:

Direct

One example of a direct movement was the roll we completed, the suspend movement before this allowed us to get into the position for this move.

Flexible

In the clip you will find that an example of a flexible move was sustained matrix, it allowed our bodies to move in an abnormal way.

Time:

Sudden

The percussive movement, also known as the hacka, was picked as an example of a sudden movement, i think this movement could also be described as shake movement- it does give a short burst of energy in the 3 times we move. #

Sustained

Again, the matrix was picked as an example for a sustained movement.

Effort:

Flick

The move here we flick our legs to the side is an example of a flick movement, in terms of dynamics this could be classed as a percussive as it is quick and sudden movement however we are planning on making this slow motion so perhaps it may not fit into this category.

Slash

An example of a slash movement in our piece would be when we rapidly raise our arms reaching up. This movement almost 'slashes' the air above us. In terms of dynamics this movement would be classed as a swing movement- it starts and finishes with an impulse.

Punch

Although not stated on the sheet an example of a punch movement would be when we have 3 vicious movements, although not all of them are 'punches' they still give the same effect whether we a punching with a fist or weapon in our hands. In dynamics this would be considered as sustained movements as all 3 are continous and ongoing one after another.

After discussing these key words and what moves would fit under each sub-heading we decided to make a list of our moves including the ones we created in pairs to try and convey a story. The final product is what can be seen in the video clip at the beginning of this blog.

Exploring Slapstick Comedy

After exploring R.A.D.S, we then moved onto exploring slapstick comedy in movement. Slapstick is a stylistic type of movement that focuses on the exaggeration of actions, they become more lively and are also used to create humour. This lesson we focused on taking inspiration from the 1952 film 'Singin' in the Rain', targeting the number "Make em laugh" performed by Cosmo aka Donald O'Connor. After watching the video it was clear that most of his movements were very clumsy and silly however that was the sole purpose of them-to make the audience laugh, Though whilst he's movement was humorous Donald's expressions, posture and the way he carried his body had 100% dedication, his number was also full of  energy which kept the humour in place. After the video we was assigned into trios and 4's to come up with a short and set he task of creating our own version of a slapstick comedy, we thought it would be comical if we went with a love triangle...

Skills Audit-Movement In Performance

Prior to this unit, I had only ever covered movement in class however this was in combination with other forms of performing arts such as scripted pieces, physical theatre etc, so I would say that I do have basic understanding of elements that make up movement/dance. I’ve also taken part in a school show which had a large amount of dance in it, so this was really useful as I hope to bring some of the skills I have learnt from it to this unit. Also just creating movement in class before this unit has allowed me to further develop my skills. In contrast, this unit will solely focus on movement in performance so I will need to make sure I am constantly deepening my knowledge of these familiar skills. One major skill that I wish to enhance is my musicality; I would say I’m more comfortable performing on my own when it comes to movement as the being one beat behind is less noticeable compared to when you are in a group, you are easily distinguishable. I do find that there are many causes as...

Evaluation- Movement in Performance

Evaluation Throughout the Movement unit I feel as though I have shown consistent growth and development of my skills within movement. At the start of this unit I set out to improve certain skills/action that I felt needed more exploration or that I had simply never used them within a performance, using workshops that specified in the elements of R.A.D.S, other factors within movement and devising our own work has allowed me to specifically focus on my skills. They were: 1. Work on my musicality 2. Explore Projection within movement 3. Amplify my full body participation Work on my musicality I feel the improvement of this skill is very clear within our final performance. I maintained focus with the music and listened out for certain beats which triggered certain movements, keeping focus of the music meant that my timing was also on time, however at 1.10 you can see me and Cameron turn around too soon, I feel as though this was a result of not enough practice of this very ...
