R.A.D.S- Relationships

This lesson we focused on relationships sector of R.A.D.S in movement. There are many keywords that revolve around the word Relationships. They are the following.
  • Side-by-side
  • Waiting
  • Back-to-back
  • One behind the other
  • Mirror
  • Unison
  • Canon
  • Interaction
  • Answer and Question
  • Lead + Follow
  • Passing
  • Contrast
We was given the task of working in pairs to create a small movement piece incorporating these key words into our movements, Our stimulus was a phrase "The breakdown of a relationship"  I was paired with Henri. We both decided that we should come up with a movement piece first before we add music, This way we could decide the emotion and pace with the music separately, as long as we had a base idea. We tried to incorporate each keyword into our movements. After lots of decisions we made a list of movements. Here is the list below:

Here is the video of our performance:

As you can see in the video we tried to focus and include every key word of relationships into our piece, however we soon found out that this was not possible. Words we could not include were: Answer + Question, Contrast and Canon. Obviously, these words can be interpreted into a movement however me and Henri didn't really understand how to experiment with these words . Watching the video above, In my opinion, I do think our movements were very loose in terms of physical ability, they were not sharp and quick. I think this was due to the way I carried myself, particularly when I completed the passing movement (walking over Henri), this did look sloppy. In contrast though, our back to back movement where we lift our arms at different heights was executed well. The pace of our movement wasn't very fast either which slowed the piece down, maybe we could find a faster paced piece of music to add to the overall energy, in turn I could then focus on the way I carry myself as well. After the performance we was given a criticism which was that there was lots of wandering about in between movements which negatively affected our concentration in our movement, I completely agree with this and I think this is a reason why everything didn't really flow-Perhaps this was a flaw in or experimentation However this is something we can improve and focus on next lesson- perhaps trying to compact our movements into a smaller space along with faster music would mean our moves would could be executed

Following on from last lesson we carried on with our paired work, this time we was given the task of focusing certain keywords that we could incorporate/improve in our movement piece. Our teacher also noted that there was lots of wandering about in our piece, we decided to create new movements but at the same time keeping ourselves contained in a small space. This way there was no excess walking around on stage. Our keywords that we had to focus on were:

  • Meet & Part
  • Compliment
  • Lead & Follow
  • Passing

As you can see in the video some movements  are much more noticeable than others. I will break down what each movement represents:

Pull Henri towards me/Pushing him away- Meet & Part
Henri rolls over my back- Passing
Swing each other round- Compliment
Henri leads movement/ I follow- Lead & Follow.

Personally, I did find the compliment movement was difficult to complete, It required me to lean back and use one to pivot at the same time, I just couldn't do it and as you can see in the video, made it look like Henri was puling me however that was not meant to be the case. This comes down the placement of my leg. In order for me to pivot I need to make sure they are supporting one another, with a good posture, I am going to focus on this as the placement of your legs in movement is a very important.

  1. Owen, you need to ensure that all of your videos are on your blog and to really analyse them - how did you use specific aspects of RADS? What did you focus on? How successful was your experimenting with movement and what will you focus on next? Merely describing the videos will only achieve a Pass so make sure the analysis is there!

Exploring Slapstick Comedy

After exploring R.A.D.S, we then moved onto exploring slapstick comedy in movement. Slapstick is a stylistic type of movement that focuses on the exaggeration of actions, they become more lively and are also used to create humour. This lesson we focused on taking inspiration from the 1952 film 'Singin' in the Rain', targeting the number "Make em laugh" performed by Cosmo aka Donald O'Connor. After watching the video it was clear that most of his movements were very clumsy and silly however that was the sole purpose of them-to make the audience laugh, Though whilst he's movement was humorous Donald's expressions, posture and the way he carried his body had 100% dedication, his number was also full of  energy which kept the humour in place. After the video we was assigned into trios and 4's to come up with a short and set he task of creating our own version of a slapstick comedy, we thought it would be comical if we went with a love triangle...

Skills Audit-Movement In Performance

Prior to this unit, I had only ever covered movement in class however this was in combination with other forms of performing arts such as scripted pieces, physical theatre etc, so I would say that I do have basic understanding of elements that make up movement/dance. I’ve also taken part in a school show which had a large amount of dance in it, so this was really useful as I hope to bring some of the skills I have learnt from it to this unit. Also just creating movement in class before this unit has allowed me to further develop my skills. In contrast, this unit will solely focus on movement in performance so I will need to make sure I am constantly deepening my knowledge of these familiar skills. One major skill that I wish to enhance is my musicality; I would say I’m more comfortable performing on my own when it comes to movement as the being one beat behind is less noticeable compared to when you are in a group, you are easily distinguishable. I do find that there are many causes as...

Evaluation- Movement in Performance

Evaluation Throughout the Movement unit I feel as though I have shown consistent growth and development of my skills within movement. At the start of this unit I set out to improve certain skills/action that I felt needed more exploration or that I had simply never used them within a performance, using workshops that specified in the elements of R.A.D.S, other factors within movement and devising our own work has allowed me to specifically focus on my skills. They were: 1. Work on my musicality 2. Explore Projection within movement 3. Amplify my full body participation Work on my musicality I feel the improvement of this skill is very clear within our final performance. I maintained focus with the music and listened out for certain beats which triggered certain movements, keeping focus of the music meant that my timing was also on time, however at 1.10 you can see me and Cameron turn around too soon, I feel as though this was a result of not enough practice of this very ...
